sketch of the day

I've recently started doing timed sketches (10-15 minutes) of random people and things. Kind of like an exercise y'know?
today's sketch is of a dear friend that I've known since 4th grade (fact check dept, double check that, please). 15 minute sketch of "the long haired girl from across the room"!!

Happy Birthday Stevie Wonder!

Born Stevland Hardaway Judkins; May 13, 1950, another icon in soul music. But, some of them are "Do I Do", "That Girl", "Ribbon In The Sky" and "As". I could give you a playlist of many other favorites, but this post would take forever to read through

The G.O.A.T.

Jim Brown. One of my favorite players, and in my opinion, the best running back the NFL has seen. He set the standard, and never once backed down from tacklers or speaking his mind!

Prince..

Prince Rogers Nelson (June 7, 1958 - April 21, 2016)......musical genius. I could go on and on about his music. How I just knew "Adore" was going to be me and my wife's First song, or how much I grooved when the drums to "Alphabet Street" came in.

The amount of music he didn't release is what always intrigued me. Or the version of a song he reduced down that didn't make the album. The man's music was all through my early years. How Rasberry Beret comes on and still makes me crack a smile because that was, for whatever reason, the song that was forever linked in my mind to the 'girl with the long hair' in elementary school. How he did the ENTIRE Batman soundtrack, and how hard BatDance went...not to mention the music video....

Rest In Purple, Prince

My 1st Drink & Draw

Went to my first Drink & Draw event last night. It was super fun. Met a few artists/animators, had a few drinks, and well...I drew. These would've been posted last night, but I was in the City with cell battery less than 18% (good job, me).

It was also a duo meet up. The awesome Women in Comics were there. If you aren't aware of what they are doing, then get familiar! Also, in honor of Women's History Month, they are hosting various events throughout the month of March. Including Saturday, March 12, 2016

Here are few sketches & scribbles from last night:
model pose sketches
couple more model post

I also did a few other sketches while I was there. The big afro woman was a young lady that was in the City last night I saw on my walk to the bar. She had this mighty afro, and I have yet to see an afro I wouldn't draw!!

Christopher Wallace aka The Notorious B.I.G.

fatally shot and killed on this day 19 years ago. Hard to believe. I still hear remember my cousin picking me up in his Honda with Warning on repeat, and reciting every lyric word for word, then I found "Unbelievable". To this day its my favorite Biggie song....

anyway, here's the sketch of the day!!

Sketch Challenge?! Daily?!?

One of the art groups I joined (the only, I believe) is doing a daily/weekly sketch challenge. I've been saying I want & need to do these to stay up and sharpen my skills. Today was the 1st one I participated in. "The Look" is this weeks theme

I tried to time myself, but I never set my timer. And then I thought, 'I should be able to keep a mental timer'. MEH, anyway, I looked down and realized I was over the time I wanted, so I didn't finish her hair. But I feel good about the sketch though!

Black History - Etta James

Etta James (born Jamesetta Hawkins; January 25, 1938 - January 20, 2012). One of my favorite soul singers. Most known for her hit "At Last". Its a song she has been on record saying she hated, because of the 'sweetning' (violins, upright bass) they added to the song. Her voice was powerful, gritty, soul stirring. I find it hard to believe you could listen to one of her songs and NOT be moved!!

Black History - James Baldwin

James Arthur Baldwin (August 2, 1924 – December 1, 1987) was an African American novelist, essayist, playwright, poet, and social critic. James Baldwin's written works made him an important spokesman of the Civil Rights Movement. His essays explored the Black experience in America and his novel, "Giovanni's Room," was one of the first to tackle homosexuality. via biography.com
